Exxon (US.XON) said Friday that it is investing to alleviate high energy prices, which it said stem mostly from years of underinvestment, particularly since the Covid-19 pandemic first hit in 2020. Exxon spokesperson Erin McGrath noted the company lost a record $22 billion that year while investing $21.4 billion. Its earnings rose to $23 billion in 2021, the highest annual profit since 2014.

Exxon said it pumped almost $120 billion into energy investments between 2017 and 2022, more than twice its earnings in those years. 

Exxon has said it plans to increase production in the Permian Basin 25% this year and is working to bring an additional 250,000 barrels a day of refining capacity online at a Beaumont, Texas, refinery.
